Volcano Skali Parking

One of the most amazing experiences of my life. The parking lot is $30 American dollars and there are plenty of places to park. They also have a food stand where you can buy hotdogs and drinks, all fairly priced. There are a couple options for hiking you can go on a 30 minute walk to the end of the lava field. Or a 2 hour hike to the erupting volcano. This site hasn’t been active recently, but when I went in July 2021 I got to see lava in real time. The hike is for all ages, just follow the path and signs and don’t stray too much or you could get lost. I recommend bringing waterproof gear and park food and drink. It’s an amazing hike and definitely recommend to any nature enthusiasts visiting Iceland.

Parked here April 2024 while Grindavik was still closed. 30 minute walk over loose gravel to get to the edge of the recent lava flow. Walked a little on the lava but it felt dangerous in places where heat was still escaping, so felt a little risky.

We were traveling by car on our trip abroad and by chance we passed by Skali volcano. We knew that it had erupted recently and thought we'd take a look.

The first attempt failed due to bad weather and stormy winds. We barely got over the first hill.

On the second attempt we got a good day. The weather was sunny and slightly windy.

From the parking lot it is a round trip of about 6 hours without a break to see all the volcanoes. (7h for "beginners and with breaks) - Many already end their hike at the lava fields viewpoint.

We recommend to hike the route until the end. A breathtaking sight!

Unfortunately, the Parka app had not worked so well. But Gudrun (Landlord) has supported us very friendly by mail.

Good place to start hiking to Fagradalsfjall eruptions area.

Awesome hike to litli hrutur. Take enough water bring enough energy and take your camera!!!

Beautiful scenery and easy to navigate and walk around, worst the visit. Regarding the car park, there are cameras! So they can get you a fine if staying there more than 15 mins

Easy to find! App easy to download register and pay online the parking fee. Prices are normal!
