Dartington Trust Shop in Totnes

The Dartington Trust Shop at 42 High St, on the corner of Totnes market place now sells books. They have an impressive layout which uses the space very well, making it calm and easy to browse. I sat for an outdoor coffee from Seeds-2-Totnes at number 40 and realised you can enjoy window-shopping at leisure. I spotted a copy of Tim Hannigan’s magnificently researched travel book on Cornwall, called The Granite Kingdom, just sitting at eye level. Please see photo

Several titles are with signed by author especially in this area.(I bought one of them)
Great variety not just for grownups but for children’s as well.
If I didn’t need to care about my luggage (and wallet), I bought more than 10 titles…

Lovely bookshop with many interesting alternative books you won't find in an ordinary bookshop. Friendly staff. Always pop in when I visit Totnes.

There is a lot more space to move about than in the old book shop but the downside is there's far fewer books. If you're politically on the left then there's enough here to pander to your opinions but if you're looking for some plurality then maybe you'll need to go elsewhere.

Nicely set out, but oppressively woke. Not really a general bookshop in any sense (as was the great bookshop it unfortunately replaced). More books by ethnic minorities than there are ethnic minorities in Totnes. Every other book is trans, green, feminist, socialist, and every other fashionable modern prejudice. There is an air of sanctimonious smugness about the place. Conspicuously weak in history, literary classics, general philosophy, or, indeed, anything that wouldn't find favour in a Guardian editorial. More a secular church than a bookshop. I do miss the old bookshop with its lovely staff. Sighs.

Books for every taste, but they don't take cash. I'm not a fan of the cashless society and so won't be returning.
