Great castle set up high above the river. Good information and lovely garden is worth a look too parking in Richmond in general tricky with town centre parking 2 hours maximum. Museum above shop very interesting with information about the conscientious objectors held in the castle during ww1.

A lovely town set a top of a hill with a beautifully kept castle ruin with a tower that gives you stunning 360° views of the area.
Large open space to wander around the castle grounds with information to read to get a good insight into what once was.
Well worth paying the entrance fee to get a proper look at it all.
Very reasonably priced and best to visit on a quiet week day.

A beautiful castle remains overlooking the scenic town of Richmond. Entry fee is reasonable, and cheaper online in advance. Gorgeous views from all angles which get better the further up the main tower you go. Plenty to explore and do within the castle grounds.

A great stronghold of the North, Richmond Castle is definitely well worth a visit - if you're in the area why not also visit Easby Abbey, also English Heritage, and only just down the road. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. There's a little museum on the site which explains the history and there are some games out on the lawn for kids. Plenty of picnic tables too if you want to bring your lunch and there's plenty of space for kids to run around. It's quite a walk to the top of the tower with several steps but well worth it. Most of the site is in ruin but the main tower is intact. Great views across the area. Robert Baden-Powell was stationed here if you're a Scout or Guide and on the day I visited there was a friendly cat strategically placed in the garden awaiting your attention. A lovely visit!

What an amazing visit to Richmond Castle, dating back to William the Conqueror through the Civil War, First World War, WW11 up to the late 40s. So much to see and read, there's a fantastic historical walk through exhibition that explains the history and power that the Dukes of Richmond had. Not to be missed if you visit Richmond.

Such an interesting castle with so much history. The lady in the visitor center was so helpful and made our visit a very pleasant experience. The exhibition space above the shop is not to be missed as it tells the history of the castle and Richmond.

Richmond castle. We, family of six with 4 boys aged from 9 to 15, have visited a good few castles across the country and I can say this is amongst the most impressive. Not because it has the largest buildings but it has a great keep and a large internal area. It also has sculptured garden and cobbled walkways. The entrance area/gift shop is small but very well stocked and the staff and very pleasant and extremely helpful. There is also a history journey room which takes you through the life of the castle from the 10th century to current day.
All in all it is a great place to visit and I imagine this will be exceptionally busy in the summer.
Also conveniently close to the water falls and the town centre.

Richmond castle is a Norman castle and has been around since the 11th century
At school I belonged to Richmond House they were named after castles Alnwick, Raby and Bamburgh.
The story was told about the little Drummer boy who sometimes you can hear playing underneath the tunnels of the castle.
The castle is open 10.00 until 17.00hrs and there is a 15 per cent off when booking online in advance.
You can also book when you visit though you do not get the discount.

First time visit to Richmond Castle using our EH membership. Free 2 hour (disk) parking in Marketplace and short walk to Castle via Morrows coffee shop (was the old Lloyd's Bank). A grand Castle with lots of open space/gardens/towers and walls to climb about, also an interesting small museum.

A decent size castle, with a tower that you can walk to the very top. The last set of stairs are quite steep but great view once at the top.

Excellent place to visit. Beautiful surroundings and plenty of open space to relax in on a sunny day. Shop on-site sells ice cream, lollies and drinks etc as well as other things made close by

Staff were helpful and friendly. The stairs up the tower were steep and uneven, but there was a handrail. For those less able with stairs, there are beautiful views of the valley from the court yard and a yew hedge garden.

Wish we'd parked somewhere else so we could have spent a bit more time exploring. Not that we'd taken one but there was plenty of space to pop down a picnic blanket and extend your stay. Great grounds to explore games out on the lawn which were great. We will definitely be back. With a picnic!!! :)

If you are able, climb the 140 (ish) steps of the keep for fantastic views of the town

Enjoyed a lovely visit, the facilities are much improved and more interactive than a few years ago. There are very interesting exhibitions which are well organised and thought out. The displays recount the history up to the modern day. The way it is presented is engaging and insightful. Some of the displays gave a view into life when the family were travelling and who remains behind, which was interesting and one in such a way that it was engaging with a lighting board depicting this.
At the current time, there is an exhibition showing the use of the castle during the First World War, when conscientious objectors were imprisoned there. This was thought-provoking.
The grounds of the castle are well cared for. There is an impressive keep with views for miles around. There is a shop, cafe and toilets.
Overall, it was a good place to visit. There's parking with a free disc just outside in the marketplace.
