Good place to stay, staff are very friendly! Shared bathroom is spacious with lots of cubicles for toilets and showers. Lots of space to hang out and plenty to do!

Really beautiful location alongside a river, overlooking mountains. Stayed here for a night whilst hiking in the Lakes. The guy on reception was really friendly and helpful.
The shared kitchen was really clean, the bar area modern and the bedding comfortable.
The drying room here was an absolute life saver.
Things to note: the road to this hostel is pretty bumpy going by car.
There is no wifi in rooms, only in communal spaces.
If you book a room using the discount code on the yha website then you can’t cancel/ alter the booking. I was caught out with this when a friend was unable to come.
Overall great for a few nights over the summer especially arriving on foot and incorporating into a hike. Hope to come back someday.

Excellent time at YHA Helvellyn for a race over the weekend from the 1st interaction to last. The guy went out of his way to ensure I had a great experience starting with storing my bag ahead of the 5pm check in to arranging a last minute breakfast with the chef who himself quickly arranged a extra portion 5 stars from me!

Amazing value place for Ullswater or Helvellyn. Falling asleep to sound of stream(gyll?) down the mountain. Staff were really helpful and the breakfast was great. Next time Id love to try one of the cabins

Absolutelly amazing!
Very helpful as well as we had a major " no watwr" issue. Resolved quickly and efficient.
Rooms are tidy, bedding is clean and the bathrooms are high standard.
Hostel is close to common hiking trails and got plenty of space to accommodate all types of groups or single hikers.
Highly recccomend!

Super super cheap, got a private room for £35. There is no denying that's good value for money.

Lovely little hostel with a really nice view.

If I had to complain about anything is there was one 2 plug sockets in our 4 bed room and the drive in is not healthy for a small car.

However, the staff were great and I really liked the hostel.

We stayed for a night during our road trip and we had a really good experience. The staff is very welcoming and helpful.
The dorms are clean and comfortable and the kitchen is perfect for cooking our own food.
Not having wifi in our room can be the only downside but the view on the mountain and the river compensate largely.
I would definitely recommend to anyone and certainly come back.

Great place. Remember this is not a hotel. Best value for money! Staff is fantastic. Clean a d location is in middle of nature. I don't know many can be so remote a close to 3 of the top 10 objective you must visit in Lake District.

Absolutely stunning location near helvellyn making it a great place to stay if you are planning on hiking in the area.

The road up is a bit of good fun especially if you meet a car heading the other direction so take it slow and steady.

The room was cozy and clean. Location is very nice but quite difficult to understand the route as there is no clear signs of YHA. The road is bit bumpy but not bad. the Yha is in the end. Just follow the road till the last end. We loved staying here. It’s a small YHA compare to others but the services and cleanliness is superb. The WiFi is terrible and no signals from ph mobile network. Nice trekking to Read Tarn and the top. Loved it with kids.

Was a welcome bit of shelter after a night heavy rain flooded our tent! We visited off season so it was rather quiet and we shared our room with one other guest. The staff were friendly though we didn't see them much, and the facilities were good - especially the drying room for all our soaked sleeping bags and tent! Gorgeous location, although it is a fair walk uphill from Patterdale.

One of the best decision made during the whole trip. The accommodation. Great place, being very minimal and affordable as well. Fiona, with an incredible customer service made us feel home. She helped us with the main attractions in and around, hiking spots etc. The food served was awesome as well. Would definitely come back for the view and calmness.

I had the pleasure of staying at this hostel on the 19th and 20th of May 2023. I was on an expedition to the lake district with a group of hikers known as the Thanet Irregulars. Originally we had only planned to stay for one night but unforseen circumstances meant that we needed accommodation for an extra night. Although there were ten of us and we hadn't booked in advance , Chris and his colleagues who manage the hostel kindly agreed to accomodate us for the extra day. The team who run the hostel were very helpful and really worked hard to look after us. They were also friendly and welcoming too. We were served tasty, no nonsense meals and there was a nice selection of beers available including Loweswater Gold and several other premium beers. The hostel is in a beautiful location right next to a stream and is ideally suited as a base for anyone wanting to explore the nearby fells such as Catstycam and and the legendary Helvellyn and striding edge. The rooms themselves were comfortable and the facilities were very good too. There's a self catering kitchen available and a drying room too and also board games that you can play. We very much enjoyed our stay at this YHA and were very thankful to Chris and his dedicated team for all their hard work in taking care of us. In summary. It's a great YHA in a beautiful location run by a team of top drawer staff. Would return without any hesitation whatsoever.

Considering I was told we were camping it was a wonderful to discover we had a roof over our head for the night. My 1st stay in a hostel and it didn't disappoint. The staff were very friendly. Comfy beds, didn't get a shower as the doors were locked upstairs. Food good. Fire alarm wake up call at 6.30am! Staff were very professional with the role call. Would stay there again.

Loved this place so much that we have booked the pod for another night on our way home from Scotland. Good food, clean showers and toilets, friendly staff, and even a red squirrel!

Despite the lane up being a bumpy ride, there was no problems with our room. It was great to be so close to Helvellyn. Staff there werevery welcoming and informative about the weather and routes.

I will start by saying this was not a normal type of hostel visit. Myself & a fellow hiking buddy were booked here for 12 day's which is a lot longer than most would stay in a hostel.

My only previous experience of staying in a hostel was in Borrowdale last year which was a lot bigger than this one but YHA Helvellyn had more than plenty of what we needed as hikers.
The rooms were clean, had plenty of space, good views & were never cold. The main lounge area had good seating between two rooms (some seated 2, some 4-6) with an additional sofa area along the corridor if you fancied a bit more peace & quiet.

The bar area had a good selection of bottled drinks & snacks.
The kitchen was open in the evening with a super club meal, each day had a set meal (2 course for £10) if you didn't fancy this then there was a selection of pizza that could be ordered between 6pm-8pm.
All the food that we are here was very well priced & enjoyable, loved it.

Facilities on site include a self catering kitchen, showers & toilets. They were all very clean & had plenty of space to move around in, warm water came through very quick as well, perfect.
Other facilities included a drying room for wet gear, again plenty of room to let boots/clothing dry out.
A note to those driving down the lane to get here, just take your time, it is bumpy if you have a low suspension you will need to take it slow & dodge a few bumps/holes, it's not THAT bad though really.

That's the technical stuff dealt with, as a hostel it has everything you need for a day (or almost two weeks) in the mountains.

Last but not least, the staff we had the privilege to stay with were all amazing. Everyone of them were super friendly, helpful, informative & also made the time to have a laugh/chat about the day you had. They showed genuine interest & good knowledge of the surrounding areas. On more than one occasion we also encountered them going above & beyond to help other people who were staying at the hostel. They really added to the stay we had & would love to revisit soon.

Highly recommend this hostel!

Great location with very helpful staff.

We stayed here with a group of friends over the weekend. Parking is adequate and safe and the dirt track upto the hostel is not as scary as some of the reviews make it sound. We had a great time and hope that we didn't disturb the other guests too much. All staff were very helpful and accommodated our requests. Would definitely recommend to others!

Thanks

Booked this place online so we could be close to Helvellyn. The drive from Glenridding to the hostel is a lot longer than it looks. Would take a good 25 mins to walk it. Once we got to the hostel it was a painless check-in. The restaurant area was very clean. Room we stayed in was just big enough to sleep in. There was 4 men in ours so a little cramped but we survived. Beds were very comfortable and clean. We were next to the toilets/showers and apart from a creaky floor outside our room it was fine. We had a stream passing the hostel which was nice. We had a meal that evening and breakfast on the morning of the climb and the food was very good. Overall the experience was good and I would definitely book again if I needed a base for Helvellyn.
