My partner and I (plus dog) called for some Sunday lunch after a walk having never visited the pub or the village before when we have visited the Lakes many times.

We were made to feel very welcome and when we asked to dine earlier than our planned booking (we'd finished the outbound section of our walk quicker than thought) it was no problem at all.

Food was served very promptly by the friendly staff, and was an excellent standard. I highly recommend the Venison Pie for anyone visiting.

The beer garden where we dined was spacious, well landscaped and surprisingly secluded for a pub that is just off of an arterial route to and from Ullswater.

We will definitely revisit when in the area again.

What an absolute gem. Walking weekend with a group of ten. Warm welcome, really friendly, helpful staff.
Supper and breakfast were both excellent, two nights, everyone raved about the food. Proper homemade, satisfying meals - perfect after a long day out on the fells.
Highly recommend.

We didn't stay in the hotel, so we can't comment on that but we did stay in our van in the car park.
We have a camper van and like to park respectfully when sleeping in it. We came across the Royal Hotel and were going to park nearby but thought we'd ask if on the off chance they'd allow us to stay in the car park if we had some drinks/food. The young man at the bar kindly agreed to let us stay if we had a meal. We had already eaten that evening but had a few pints and after our walk the next day we did stay for food and more drinks. We had the curry mayo sandwiches and they were amazing! You rarely find that filling of choice on sandwiches in pubs and so this was so refreshing to have. We had a really nice experience at this pub, both with the friendly and helpful staff and the lovely food.

Second time my partner has taken me here for my birthday, was just as nice this time as it was the last. Bedrooms are lovely and comfortable, with a great view out of the window. High quality duvet covers and comfortable pillows. Rooms get cleaned every day with fresh towels provided. The toiletries smell amazing, last year we ended up purchasing some shower gel from the bar.
We ate here 3/4 of the nights. The chef creates some amazing dishes, in fact, we went to a Michelin starred restaurant for my birthday and the meals cooked here are just as good, if not better! We had the lamb shank on the last night and the meat fell off the bone, it was the best cooked lamb we’ve ever had. Breakfast every morning included in the price, you can choose anything you want from the menu and it’s cooked fresh for you. The chef is also very accommodating to any changes you would like on your plate. We love the food cooked here and the comfortable/ cozy setting of the downstairs food area and bar. Food and drink are reasonably priced too.
The young bar staff and waiters/waitresses are attentive and very friendly. The two young lads that served us during our stay were always on their feet and never seen on their phones (like you see a lot of nowadays). Even when it was quiet and only me and my partner were sitting having drinks, they’d always find something to do, the owners have employed some good staff.
We’ll most likely be returning again :)

Amazing little hotel near to the best walking trails. The staff were really nice and polite. The food was outstanding at the bar and the breakfast. We will definitely come back. 🐾🦮🐶
Only one problem was the central heating system, sometimes it was too cold in the room but this is my personal opinion.

What an amazing cozy escape this Hotel is!

From very friendly staff and customer service to the quaint and historical interiors that mix modern with old aesthetics. Our room was clean well kept and very comfortable to stay in. The breakfast the next morning was beautiful with extras put on for more options with your breakfast...

Cannot recommend enough and will definitely be staying here again

Thank you so much for your hospitality

Best Sunday roast I’ve had so far in the UK. Massive portion sizes, super tasty, and lovely pub. Great service too. I’m bringing my dad here next time he comes to the UK

Outstanding pub lunch!!! Worth travelling off the beaten track and potentially hitting a sheep for this lunch. Beef, lamb and chicken all a hit at this table, plus the ice cream selection

Fantastic beer garden space with a giant chess board. A good size car park. The menu has a good and varied selection. Our food was nice, which we ate outside in the sunshine. Great location - quiet and out the way of the busier hubs. Gorgeous area to explore.

We have been visiting the Lake District for many years. This is the best country pub food in Cumbria that we have enjoyed.

This is a great place to stay in beautiful surroundings. Very friendly staff. Twin bedded room on first impression looked very small, however, there was loads of storage space wardrobe, drawers and bathroom cupboard which surpassed many other places I've stayed. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful choices. The power shower was top class. Will definitely go back. Thankyou

We we’re staying at the Troutbeck caravan site and had an evening meal on our last evening as a treat. We weren’t let down. My wife really enjoyed her steak, chef went out of his way to accommodate her ‘intolerances’. My nut roast with goats cheese was vey good also. With today’s inevitable higher prices it is easy for people to be over critical when eating out. Glad to say, these chaps excelled.

What a fab little hotel. Warm welcome awaits you. The rooms was spacious and comfortable. We had a meal in the evening which was delicious, highly recommend the pate for starters and pavlova for dessert! Had the dog with us, she received an equally warm welcome.
Breakfast in the morning was lovely, you have to try the homemade muesli.
We left buying some of the beautiful toiletries they use and sell
