Excellent museum. We went without knowing much about what they had to offer and we were quite impressed. The Etruscan exhibits were fascinating but there is so much more from all different eras! Don’t make the same mistake we did- allow yourself tons of time! We arrived an hour and a half before closing and could have easily spent another hour or so.

Thus was well worth the visit and the crowds. They house such beautiful works of art.

A fantastic museum with extraordinary art and crafts left behind by the enigmatic Etruscans.

Very interesting place to visit under the palace and then you see the wall of the old town.

The MAEC is a must-see!
For starters, it is a crying shame that Cortona is not higher on more need-to-visit lists of Tuscany - this is an absolutely beautiful mountain-side town, with incredible food and spectacular views over the Chiana valley!
But it also has a rich history dating back to pre-Roman Etruscan times, and this is where the MAEC comes in. Located right in the centre of town - a stone's throw away from the Town Hall - this museum is a truly wonderful journey through the settlement of the area before Italy was completely overrun by the Romans, and you really can't miss it. They have so many fascinating pieces (most of them local finds!) and amazing exhibits showcasing everything we know about the architecture, religion, culture and lifestyle of the Etruscans.
Also worth noting are the archaeological digs - still ongoing! - attached to the museum. They are a short drive out of town and down the hill, but there you can find two original Etruscan family burial mounds, and even go inside one! There isn't much signage, but the atmosphere really grips you.

Excellent exhibition of Etruscan artefacts. This is quite a large museum over a number of floors, so allow a couple of hours at least.

This museum is quiet and nice to go with kids or history enthusiasts. Big kids would like it.
