Where do you start?
I hade to ware sun glasses when I entered the bar as the smiles on each of the staff were radiating so much. Very nice to see.
Regarding the food, it's had to go wrong with beef lasagne but it's very hard to go the other way. And boy oh boy, it was very nice. Also it's very appreciated to actually see "real" chips.

My wife's hunters chicken was double up with tons of sauce.

So the question of: was it worth the long road; yes it is. Go there and enjoy.

Side note; the beer is front a local source and very nice as well.

Really friendly staff. Very helpful very friendly. Food was superb and the roaring fire was lovely. Great pint of Guiness too. Plus England won and the 80's backing track was a real bonus(I'm bias though as I love the 80's)

Great place to start your hike! I had the Burger. Big, filling meal. Very reasonably priced. The lad behind the bar was very hospitable. I enjoyed my time!

Lovely meal, I had the Red Cow burger stack and it was delicious. Dog friendly so my dog was allowed in the bar. We sat next to the open fire after a dreary wet day of walking to warm up. Will definitely return again.

Proper chips, perfectly cooked lamb shank. I just pulled the bone from it, absolute perfection! It came in a bowl with a mint gravy and it was faultless!

Do not miss out!

Don't often leave many reviews, but after spending the day hiking in the brecon beacons, stumbled across the pub and glad we did. Food was brilliant, great portions and very reasonably priced, staff were lovely as well, definitely recommend.

After driving to Pen Y Fan from Newport and climbing the mountain in wind and rain my friend and I were soaked to the bone and looked on line for a pub that does both grub at 3pm on a Saturday and was dog friendly… we found this little gem called The Red Cow Inn! We called ahead and the lady was sooooo lovely and saved us a table as we said we would be half hour…
The outside of the pub is sooooo traditional, such a delight to see some old British pubs are still thriving rather than being torn down! The inside didn’t disappoint either! Welcoming staff immediately at the door… A roaring fire in the background, along with regular patrons dotted around the bar, it was beautifully buzzing! Got two cold pints of Madri with change from a tenner… amazing traditional home cooked food options it was like taking a step back in time when everything on a menu was appealing and full of proper British “pub grub”!
I had chicken curry half chips half rice and it came with warm bread..The chicken reminded me of when my mama made curry and it was all “stringy” yum yum. My friend had chicken in whisky sauce and we both devoured the meals like it was our last! We ordered 2 sausages for the dog and that wasn’t a problem at all x They were HUGE lol. (Mac says thanks! Woof!)
FYI the chips are to die for!!!!! They were the proper cut potatoes deep fried but even I can’t make them like that!!! Amazing!!! Whilst eating we were asked how are meals were (outstanding and fresh!) as soon as our plates were empty they were cleared with a smile… 😊 There was a young sweet girl as well going around the pub clearing and wiping tables constantly…
Unfortunately we had to be somewhere else at 6 and our table was rebooked or we would’ve stayed and just sat by the fire… On leaving the young man who took the cash payment was delightful and we left the change it was more than well deserved… but it’s not about that, it’s about knowing that there are these little gems of British pubs still existing even if you have to drive a little to get there!
I can’t wait to return to the Red Cow Inn as we climb mountains down that area very frequently… I’ve told all my friends… and can’t wait to return… PLEASE go to this pub.. it’s truly a special place. Xxxx
Thanks… love Sally and David x from gloomy, miserable Newport lol 😂

Lovely local pub, great atmosphere with a lovely fireplace. We only had drinks but the food looked good from what we saw. Varied menu with veggie options.

Amazing Pub! So friendly and welcoming. Reasonably priced for Ale and a roaring fire. Just what you need after a long walk. Beware the Naughty Corner and dodgy wifi!

Whilst stopping in Talgarth and the rain wasn't letting up so we took our Grandchildren to Vertigo indoor play zone, after we turned up to the Red Cow pub of the beaten track in Ponticill ( reccomend booking main meal times). The reviews were great, We were greeted by friendly staff and made room for our party of four, drinks order taken followed up with food order, i was pointed towards the stack burger and why not . The food came 20/30 minutes later with the portion sizes were just right, we finished all our meals but left no room for pudding but enjoyed our meal & time here. lovely pub an friendly staff, Many thanks Neil

We were camping near by and arranged to meet family for a long overdue reunion. We were welcomed with a smile, we hadn't booked, however the staff reserved a corner table for us. The food was good old pub grub that was enjoyed by us all. So much so we arranged to come back and do it all again a week later. The curry was a huge hit and my burger was one of the best ever. We live in Scotland and are already planning to come back again to meet family here. Service was fabulous. Prices of food and drink was very reasonable. The staff and landlady were so friendly. Thank you all.

Perfect Welsh pub with absolutely heavenly homemade chips and affordable prices for some great food. The lamb cawl was easily slurpable and the range of beers is impressive. Highly recommend for a rewarding meal after the nearby hikes
