Built c. 1270 this is the only surviving medieval bridge with it's central gatehouse still intact. Now pedestrianised it forms a really nice link for the town & is a focal point for the riverside park which is great for picnics or just relaxing by the water.

I’m giving this 5* primarily on its historic significance.

Monnow Bridge in Monmouth isn't just any old bridge; it's a medieval marvel that has stood the test of time, offering a unique glimpse into the past with every step you take across it. As the last surviving fortified river bridge in Britain with its gate tower standing proudly on the bridge itself, it's like walking through a portal to the 13th century.

Originally built to defend the town, Monnow Bridge has seen centuries come and go, with its stones bearing witness to countless stories. The charm of the bridge lies not just in its historical significance but also in its picturesque setting, making it a photographer's dream and a history enthusiast's delight.

Strolling across this ancient structure, you can't help but feel a deep connection to the generations that have crossed it before you. The bridge isn't just a crossing point over the River Monnow; it's a monument to medieval engineering, resilience, and the rich tapestry of Welsh history.

I love visiting Monmouth. Nice to sit by the river eating fish and chips. There's a fine chippy just by the bridge and a payable car park, too, as well as a clean public convenience. It's easily accessible. The one shopping street is well worth a wander too. Very friendly locals.

I loved this bridge !! I'd always wanted to visit there !! Finally I did this past summer !! YAY !! 👍 👍 It made me feel wonder what was like to be living back in the Era ! There were many people walking around ,bicycling ,skate boarding & also kids & people were on the river banks ,too !! There was a bus stop very near by this bridge ,it took about 55 minutes to get there by bus from the city centere of Newport ! There was a Waitrose less than 5 minutes away from this bridge by walk & There was a clean toilet at the Waitrose right by the front entrance ! There are many nice cafes & restaurants & pubs close by ,too !! I really enjoyed walking around this bridge & in the beautiful town !!

Such feeling of walking on an 800 years old medieval bridge! It is pedestrian only and you can stop and admire the ducks and swans underneath it.
We also let our dog play a little in the water so everyone enjoyed it fully.

I have visited Monmouth and the surrounding area many times. Even so, this day was damp, brooding low clouds, and which gave Monmouth an atmosphere that was quiet. Only a few people about as dusk changed the light.
The buildings took on appearance as though time had stood still.
The river and the bridge were timeless. Walk through to the round stone historical feature on the left close to St. Thomas's Church and Monmouth on reading the text will enhance the visualisation of Monmouth, which helps its history truly, to come alive.

This impressive bridge and gatehouse was the thirteenth century entrance to Monnouth over the river Monnow. Now accessible by foot it offers a chance to reflect and wonder what stories it holds.

Personally I remember my parents going through it by car only to be stuck in almost 2ft of water on the road the other side towards Rockfield and having to wade out and help push.

Lovely old bridge, closed to traffic which enables you to walk over it safely for an up close view. Watch the ducks or sit & look up/down the river. Car park & a picnic/seating area nearby even an ice cream van for a nice sunny day! Located at the bottom of the main shopping street too!!

The monnow Bridge is the most historical landmark in Monmouth, situated at the heart of the town conveniently next to a car park. The bridge no longer accommodates vehicles, since the the early 2000's as constant use by large vehicles was causing damage to the building. I was lucky enough to have previously passed over the Monnow bridge and there was a tour guide standing outside promoting a free tour inside the building, which was very interesting, but I'm not exactly sure how often these tours happen, but on this occasion the guide dedicated about 45 minutes to giving a talk about the history of the building and its use throughout the ages and a tour around the small space inside. There are many useful places to visit around the Monnow bridge, such as a fish & chip shop, a pub, public toilets, and around 5 benches which enables you to sit beside the river in full view of the Monnow bridge, where many people sit and feed the ducks. The whole area is at a level convenient for wheelchair and pram access, and has plenty of space if you are out walking your dog too. If you happen to visit on a Friday or Saturday you have the added benefit of Monmouth market which occupy the car park right next to the bridge. Those days are usually exceptionally busy, especially if you are planning on driving through the town.

A really lovely medieval bridge, no cars allowed, which is brilliant because the bridge doesn't get damaged and you get up and close to admire the architecture, win win.

It's the only medieval defensive bridge with the tower still intact. Situated on the wye river to Monmouth. Car park 50 yards away with easy access for the disabled .

A fascinating structure if you are interested in medieval architecture, Monnow Bridge, built in 1270, is the only surviving medieval bridge in Britain with a gate tower still standing on the bridge.

It's at the bottom end of the town if you follow the High Street downhill. The main car park used by visitors is next to it, so you can't miss it.

How can anyone visit without coming here first. Has to be the most iconic building on a bridge in the UK. All routes lead this way, had a few moments each way.
