Very cool views from the top. Sunrise viewing requires a reservation. Was a great experience, very cold up there. After the sunrise group leaves by 8 ish, the park was pretty empty.

Spending the afternoon and evening in the summit district was a highlight of our week in Maui! The Park Rangers were awesome. The amount of endemic species to see was amazing. The views of the volcano crater, the sunset, and the stars were incredible!

I recommend driving up yourself and viewing the sunset. It only costs you $30 for the vehicle, which covers you for 3 consecutive days. It is less crowded for sunset than sunrise. You should pack a picnic dinner to take with you. The sunset is beautiful. The 'ua'u birds nest in July, and the silverswords bloom in July as well. You will want to be sure to see these things.

Go for sunrise or sunset (we went for sunset which did not require a reservation like sunrise does). You will not be disappointed. Truly breathtaking to drive up above the clouds as you summit the mountain. The road is well-maintained, but be sure to account for extra time to summit as lines to enter the park can get long and take a while. If possible, purchase an America the Beautiful pass ahead of time (good at most NP service locations). It’ll speed up entry. Get there early to get good spots on the main summit viewing area or arrive even earlier to finish with a hike from the main parking lot to the actual summit of the mountain. Pack a jacket, at that elevation it can get chilly or downright cold (even in the summer months).

What an amazing view 10,023 ft above the ground! The park requires reservation for the sunrise watch. The reservation opens 2 months prior and costs only $1. The parking fee I believe was $30 per vehicle. Highly recommend wearing layers and bring a blanket or two. The temperature drops below 50s and get get to low 40s up in the summit. Bring hand warmers and hot drinks/coffee if you need to. Arrive early so you can get parking as it can fill up quickly. The view was spectacular and you can’t get any better sunrise than this. We were above the clouds watching the sunrise.

The #1 recommendation I make to travelers visiting Maui is to make time to do Haleakala for sunrise. At the time of writing this, the National Park Service first releases the $1 permits 60 days ahead of the morning you want to visit.
Definitely time your journey to arrive at the park entrance (where you pay the park entrance fee) about 60-75 minutes before sunrise. From there, it’s another ~20 minutes until the summit parking lot.
It gets very cold in the morning at 10k feet elevation. Bring more layers than you think you’ll need!
Once you’re done viewing sunrise, the drive back down has numerous hikes and bathroom facilities to stop by. And at that time of morning, there are very few people driving *up* against your direction of travel.

Most of the photos on this aren't actually of the sign. The sign is here on the right side of the road about one hundred yards from the entrance payment station. Get here early or else you'll find others wanting photos with the sign, or you'll find a backup of cars trying to enter the park.

Was able to get the reservation 2 days ahead, just stay ready 7:00 am to hit the reservation button :) $1 , and only after you get the reservation get the park entrance per vehicle
Breathing experience for sunrise! A windproof jacket will be handy :)

This was my first time and was not sure what to expect. I was blown away viewing from the top. This is something you have to see it yourself. I did not got reservations for sunrise as it was fully booked, but we went after 7 am and it was perfect for us. Not many people and do not forgot to hike down .

A must see when in Maui. Sunset or sunrise. Sunrise is through reservations only. Get here 2 hours early at sunset to secure parking. No restrooms on the summit.

You have arrived on Mars. Do take some time to stop and acclimate yourself on the way up if you are altitude sensitive. It is 10000 ft

Amazing place for sunrise and sunset!
Get dressed warm as it is cold and windy regardless of the time of year.
Admission is 30.00 per car, and reservation is needed for sunrise; similar for sunset but without reservation.
Parking is chaotic, so plan accordingly the arrival. Driving to and from the summit can be challenging at times.

I just want to give a shout out to Cathy who works here and gave us excellent advice about how to best navigate the park 👌🏽

(Haleakala itself is INCREDIBLE! I reviewed the park in general at the specific lookout we were at)

About 90 minutes from town to the peak. If you ever trust a stranger, please trust me. The experience is life changing.
