I was pulled over on my moped by officer Stephen L.
He was super cordial, friendly, and caring. I was driving a Lil erratic and he stopped me to make sure I wasn't impaired. I did a few field sobriety tests and a quick breath check. I was free to go after he had concluded his stop. I have never had a police encounter like this EVER!! Thanks again Stephen for making sure I was OK 👍. Maui police Department hopefully makes him CHIEF one Day!

Visiting from Wisconsin and had my purse stolen. Everyone I have dealt with has been wonderful. Very professional, caring and helpful in every way. Thank you so much to everyone involved. One more reason I love Maui!

All I have to say is WoW...!!! Maui's finest are very professional. I had my car broken into and they were quick to show up and did a very thorough initial investigation... Thank you...!!! Our tax dollars being well-spent.

My experience was fantastic. I had a concern while on vacation and they quickly responded to my concern after the local police dismissed me.

Overall the Maui County Police have to deal with a lot of nonsense that no Police department should. Yet they do need some rebranding of themselves. Between their own police being caught up in drug stings and other cops being seen as bullies by locals, they could use some positive branding and do more community outreach in a more visible fashion. Every office I have come in contact with has been great, but the over all public opinion needs some work.

Tourist: Watch out when leaving the airport. They watch for tourist trying to figure out where they are going while leaving the airport, and when you go over the speed limit, they will pull you over. Of course the speed limit is set too low so that they will get you. Saw 3 police car traps within 5 miles of airport. Done with Maui.

Just got off the phone with an operator, apparently she is having a bad morning already.... Wasn't friendly at all or kind. .. a'ole aloha spirit. I guess apparently you can't ask questions about having an officer coming to your establishment to help protect the environment. It was just a question ma'am. Cheeeez, drink your coffee BEFORE you start your shift . No can

It's unfortunate to have to write this about our Police Department on Maui. Specifically, the dispatchers. For the entire time that I've lived here, 40+ years & over 2/3 of my life, I do my best never to call the dispatch because they are without fail always rude and condescending. I've had friends who have taken a job there (because they're always hiring), and here's how it goes:

The dispatch department is always short of people and looking to hire new people. The dispatchers currently there work tons of overtime & complain about how overworked they are. However, when new hires come in they get treated so badly by the existing dispatchers that they quit.... & the existing poor overworked (sarc) dispatchers continue to complain about all their overtime, intimidate
& drive away new hires, & so the cycle continues. They are always shorthanded and there's a simple explanation why, and it's quite a wonder that the management there does not recognize and fix the problem.

Meanwhile, if you're a law-abiding citizen who calls to report information, expect to be treated extremely rudely and interrogated as if you are a criminal.

Had my laptop stolen. Called the police said nothing they can do. Did there job for them by locating it at a pawn shop. Then had it taken by the police for evidence so that the pawn shop owner could get his money back. Last time i checked its illegal to buy stolen property. Im the victim and yet you protect the pawn shop owner. Tried getting it back from them and was given the run around. Was told the prosecutors office has to release then called them and was told the police have to release it and so on.... Never got a call back or anything. Bottom line they all crooks!!!

I needed to call the police department (non emergency line)2 times recently and have been completely shocked at the responder! I don't know why they are so rude, she made me want to hang up, i'm very calm and informative but she was downright aggressive and actually mean. something needs to change~ the officers are always helpful and respectable.

I've filed an RFS about officer conduct when dealing with females. Never get into a car alone with an unknown male... Even if they're wearing a badge.... Especially here in Maui. Im writing this on behalf of a loved one.

Tourists beware. Locals will tell you that this is one of the most corrupt departments in the U.S. Don't let these guys fool you, they are not your friend. Non-locals are viewed as a problem and are regularly harassed with their own words manipulated in an attempt to self-incriminate. For your own good, do not speak to them more than necessary.
