Great place to visit to get familiar with native and introduced plants! I learned so much from the brochure as well as the accompanying app, which had detailed ethnobotanical info. I went here upon arriving in Maui and am so glad I did. It really enriched my experiences on the island, being able to recognize and appreciate more deeply the plants I see.

Love love love this tranquil botanical garden. Serves many purposes for me. I volunteer with the Weed and Pot Club on Wednesdays, and love my MNBG hui 🫶🏾
I learn a lot from the akamai staff...Emmely, Namea, Aaron, Alexa & Tamara, and team members Kekoa & Michael... about the NATIVE HAWAIIAN PLANTS! They have wonderful events/workshops with cultural intentions so we can pay it forward.

Excellent Arber day community event. Everyone received a tree or plant to take home. So many informative booths about conservation, native species, national parks, proper planting, pruning etc. Spent half a day and bought several amazing plants available at the display booths.

What a lovely little botanical garden right in town! A gem! Amazing interpretive signage and a self guided audio tour. We learned so much about Hawaii’s native plants and their cultural history and uses. Have a few hours before your flight home? Spend it here!

A very beautiful garden. It is not a garden with lots of flowers - more focus on knowledge and how each plant has been used for medicine, dyes, infrastructure, etc. Staff was very friendly and this is a must go if you like to learn about the local culture instead of a touristy destination.

I highly recommend the docent-led tour! We learned how important plants were to the original Polynesians, and their myriad uses. It was informative, and so interactive that the teen in our group never had a chance to pull out her phone.

Beautiful gardens filled with native, endemic and Polynesian-introduced plants, and information about how they were used by ancient Hawaiians. Bring a picnic!

We were looking to kill a little time before our flight home with something interesting and off the beat and path (for Maui at least), and the gardens to did not disappoint. It's self-guided with an app you download on your phone. Walk through the gardens and scan the QR code by a plant that interests you and it tells you the story about it. The garden is well-maintained and peaceful. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and seem to care about what they do. A great way to spend an hour in Kahului.

This is a small but very cool garden. If you're looking for real Hawaiian plants, this is the place to go. They have so many endemic and indigenous plants. They also have many of the plants introduced by the Polynesians and with descriptions of how they were used. Great value for the money!

If you want to know about Hawaiian plants and how they helped the early settlers then this is the place to go. The only fragrant hibiscus is a native of Hawaii but whats is its absolutely dancing Hawaiian name? See, you need to go.....no Googling!

Fantastic! Loved it! I felt at peace surrounded by the plants. It is a nice place to take a relaxing walk! You can park along side the road or at the big parking lot across the street.

I loved this smaller garden. This is an excellent educational experience, focused on the historically important plants to the native Hawaiian people. There is a companion app, and you can scan each plant's placard with your smartphone to give both written and audio tours about how that native plant was integral to the development of Hawaiian life.

What a fantastic botanical garden and great opportunity to see Hawaii’s endemic and indigenous flora as well as the “canoe plants” brought by the first human inhabitants. Signage for each plant indicates common name, scientific name, family, native range plus a QR code linking to ethnobotanical details. We learned garden also participates in conservation efforts such as distributing free native plants on Arbor Day and building an Ohia seed bank to help combat Rapid Ohia Death. On top of it all, the staff were all super knowledgeable and helpful. I only wish I’d known about the opportunity to volunteer at 830am on Wednesdays!

Fantastic public garden. Great app-based tour with audio ethnobotanical explanations of plants that, for a mainlander like me, really opened my eyes to the islands, flora, fauna, and culture I am visiting. Enlightening and easily accessible. 10/10 recommend if you’re visiting Maui.
